Lake Bohinj at a glance

Lake Bohinj is a separate destination from Bled, with its own lake, its own villages and the mountains of the Triglav National Park around it. A regular bus links Bled with the lake. The Savica Falls above the lake have an entry fee since 1 August 2026, and the Vogel cable car is closed for maintenance, with the end currently expected on 1 December 2026.

This page covers how to get there, what the falls cost, the cable car, swimming and the rules in the park. For other trips from Bled see the day trips page.

Getting from Bled to Lake Bohinj

By bus, with a change of plan if you take the train.

By bus

The regular bus runs from Bled via Bohinjska Bistrica to Ribčev Laz, the access point to the lake. Longer connections come from Ljubljana and Jesenice. Check the current timetable for the journey time and the last return bus.

By train

The train does not go to the lakeshore. Bohinjska Bistrica is a separate village with a station, and from there you continue to the lake by bus or taxi. During track works in autumn, replacement buses run, so check the timetable first.

By car

From Ribčev Laz it is 9 km to the car park below the Savica Falls, about 15 minutes by car. Plan your parking and the opening hours of the falls together.

For the bus from Ljubljana to Bled, which many visitors take first, see Lake Bled from Ljubljana.

Savica Falls: entry and opening hours

A new visitor system applies since 1 August 2026.

PeriodOpening hours
August and September8 a.m. to 7 p.m.
October9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
November and December9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Entry is €4 from age 16, and younger visitors enter free. The first Sunday of every month is free for everyone. The Julian Alps Bohinj Card includes the entry. Visitors with a recognised disability and an EU card, and licensed group guides, enter free. The access can be closed in heavy rain, thunderstorms, snow, ice, floods or when there is a risk of falling rocks.

A summer bus ran from Bohinjska Bistrica to Savica until 31 August 2026. Outside the summer season plan on a car or a taxi. For most visitors, arriving in the morning keeps you comfortably inside the shorter autumn hours.

The Vogel cable car

Closed for maintenance, expected until 1 December 2026.

The cable car is closed for extensive maintenance, with the end expected on 1 December 2026. The exact day of the reopening is still to be announced. Check the cable car's own website for the reopening date and the new prices before you plan around it.

Swimming and park rules

Swimming is allowed in the lake, with some limits.

The national park allows swimming in Lake Bohinj. The designated bathing areas are the Fužina bay and Ukanc, and it is best to stay there. The permission does not extend to the high mountain lakes. Local algae can gather on the shore, so avoid areas with discolouration or a coating. Dogs may not swim in the designated bathing areas.

In the park, dogs must be on a leash and you should not walk up to grazing cattle. Drones need the prior consent of the park, and free camping is not allowed outside designated places. For swimming at Bled see the swimming guide.
