Hiking at Lake Bled at a glance

Lake Bled hiking comes in two kinds. One is the path around the lake, about 6 km long. The other is a set of short but steep climbs through the forest to viewpoints: Ojstrica, Mala Osojnica and Velika Osojnica. All three look down on the lake and the island.

Plan the climbs by weather, not by clock. A short climbing time still means a steep forest path. If you would rather see the area with a guide, guided Lake Bled tours cover the main sights, and the viewpoints are easy to do on your own.

Ojstrica and Mala Osojnica

The viewpoints most visitors choose.

Ojstrica is the shortest climb. The path starts in the south of Velika Zaka near the campsite and climbs to the summit at 611 m in about 20 minutes. Mala Osojnica needs about 45 minutes on a steep forest path. From there Velika Osojnica is about 20 minutes further and is the highest of the three at 756 m.

A simple way to choose: take Ojstrica for a quick view, Mala Osojnica for a wider panorama and Velika Osojnica if you want the highest point of the three. The lake and the island are the main view from all three points. After the climb you can add the castle on the same day.

The lake loop

About 6 km around the water.

The path around the lake is about 6 km long. It is a walk on the shore, not a hike, but it is not an always level circuit: climbs to viewpoints make the distance longer. Not every part of the shore is a car-free pedestrian zone, so watch for traffic. You can join the loop at any point and combine it with a swim, see the swimming guide.

Safety and what to bring

The climbs are short, but the paths are steep.

Footing

Hiking shoes and water are recommended for the viewpoint walks. You need to be sure-footed on steep forest paths.

Weather

Short climbing times do not make the walks weather-proof. Check the forecast before you set off, and turn around if the path becomes unsafe.

Closures

Paths can be closed for safety work, for example some footpaths up to the castle. Look at the signs and use another marked path when one is closed.

Parking

Do not count on free parking at the trailheads. Parking rules are on the getting there page.

Walks beyond the shore

If you want more than the lake.

Vintgar Gorge

The gorge path is 1.6 km on wooden walkways, with a return on the King of Triglav theme trail of 4.1 km. The whole route is 5.7 km. Details on the Vintgar Gorge page.

Zasip and Hom

Zasip is a village about 2 km north of Bled on the southern slope of Hom, with the church of St. Catherine and a view from Hom.

Straža

Straža is run as a summer toboggan site, and its operation changes, so check before you plan around it.

Lake Bohinj

For longer days in the mountains, the Lake Bohinj page covers the bus, the Savica Falls and the park rules.
