A short history of Lake Bled
The lake basin was shaped by glaciers and by movements of the earth's crust. That is the explanation for the lake, not a legend. The written history begins in April 1004, when Henry II gave the estate of Bled to the Bishop of Brixen. This is the earliest written mention of Bled.
The 1004 charter concerns the estate, not the castle. The first written mention of the castle dates from 1011. You can see the castle today: details on opening hours and prices are in the Bled Castle guide, and the island church has its own page, Bled Island and the pletna boats.

Bled in dates
The main steps from the estate to the modern town.
1004: the estate
In April 1004 Henry II gave the Bled estate to the Bishop of Brixen.
1011: the castle
The first written mention of the castle dates from 1011. The castle stands on a cliff above the water.
The Middle Ages: pilgrims
The island church has been a pilgrimage site since the Middle Ages. People still come for the church, the wishing bell and the climb up the steps.
1142 and 1534: church and bell
A first stone church on the island was consecrated in 1142. The wishing bell was made in Padua in 1534.
1855: the spa town
Arnold Rikli, a Swiss naturopath, opened a natural-healing establishment in Bled in 1855. Bled's story as a spa resort goes back to it.
After the Second World War: Vila Bled
The villa on the shore served as a residence of Josip Broz Tito. A royal summer residence had stood on the site before.

Guided day trips and combinations that include the sights in this history, with live prices and availability.
The castle and its new museum
The castle museum has a new permanent exhibition. The first part opened on 17 April 2025, and the full exhibition has been complete since 21 May 2026. It covers the settlement of the area, the administration of the castle, daily life, the spa era and the development of tourism.
The upper courtyard holds the museum and the chapel. On the lower courtyard you find the printing shop, which dates from 1999, and the wine cellar close by. Do not expect only period-furnished rooms. The castle is a museum with several working places, so plan the visit that way.

The island church and the wishing bell
The south steps have 99 stairs, and visitors ring the bell inside the church to make a wish. That the wish will come true is a tradition and a belief, not a fact. Treat it as part of the visit.
Opening hours and prices for the church change by season. In 2026 the cultural admission for adults is โฌ12, and the pletna ride costs โฌ20 per adult, as a separate ticket. Details are in the island guide.

From pilgrims to a spa resort
How the town found a second life.
The Rikli years
Rikli's establishment of 1855 belongs to the history of natural healing. Read it as history. Nothing here is a medical claim about the lake or the air today.
The villa on the shore
Vila Bled was a residence of Tito after the Second World War, and a royal summer residence stood on the site earlier. A tea pavilion named Belvedere is also part of the story. There is no public Tito museum, and no interior that is open at all times, so enjoy the view of it from the shore.
