Bled Castle at a glance

Bled Castle (Blejski grad) stands on a rock above the lake and looks down on the water and the island. Inside you find a museum, a chapel, a printing press and a wine cellar, spread over a lower and an upper courtyard.

If you would rather not organise the trip yourself, guided Bled tours from Ljubljana can include the castle. The prices below are the entry prices for 2026 and can change.

What you can see inside the castle

The castle has several areas, and each has its own character.

The museum

The permanent exhibition has been on show in full since 21 May 2026. The first part opened on 17 April 2025. It follows the history of the area from the first settlement through the running of the castle and daily life to the spa years and the rise of tourism, so it replaces the earlier museum display.

Chapel and upper courtyard

The chapel and the museum are on the upper courtyard, with the view of the lake below you.

Printing press

The printing press is in the lower courtyard and has been run there since 1999. Close by, or slightly higher up, is the wine cellar.

What to expect

Expect historical exhibitions and several working areas, not a complete set of original furnished rooms. Workshops can keep their own hours, which do not always match the opening hours of the castle.

Getting up to the castle

Footpaths lead up from the lake side.

Footpaths from the lake and the parish house side are sometimes closed for safety work, for example after rockfall. Check the situation when you arrive and plan for another marked path if one is closed. The castle itself stays open when a path is closed.

From April to October the last entry is 30 minutes before the 8 p.m. closing. The printing press and the wine cellar can keep their own hours, so go earlier in the day if you want to see every area. From November to March the castle closes at 6 p.m., which makes the afternoon shorter, and the pletna runs on shorter hours in those months too.

You can combine the castle with the island on the same day, but the costs are separate. The pletna return trip is €20 for adults and €10 for children aged 4 to 12, and the island's cultural ticket is €12 for adults. Read more on the Bled Island page. For a second viewpoint, the short climb to Ojstrica takes about 20 minutes and is described in the hiking guide.

A short history of Bled Castle

Two dates are often mixed up.

The first written mention of the castle itself dates from 1011. The year 1004 belongs to the Bled estate, which Emperor Henry II gave to the Bishop of Brixen, not to the castle. More about the castle, the pilgrimage island and the spa years is in the history of Lake Bled.
